Finding a Spot at Au Temps Jadis in Tokyo

On one summer afternoon during my stay in Tokyo, I visited a crepe
café in Tokyo. My friend recommended it for me and the name of the
place is called “Au Temps Jadis.” On the small street just off the
bustling Kouen-dori in the Shibuya area, I found the neighborhood
quieter and spotted a nice brick building.

「オ・タン・ジャディス」クレープリーにて_a0097015_1592247.jpg

I went downstairs and open the door to enter Au Temps Jadis.
The café was small, open, and charming. I immediately felt
comfortable and sat down at a big table in the back of the café.
From the menu, I chose the set menu that offered both an entrée
crepe and a dessert crepe.

I started my lunch with a glass of Cidre, a typical apple drink from
the Bretagne region of France. After a while, a couple came to my
table and asked me if they could join me. I found this type of
unexpected meeting interesting. We introduced ourselves to one
another. Then the server brought me a small green salad and
followed after it came a delicious seafood crepe in cream sauce.
The couple next to me ordered a smoked-salmon crepe and an egg
& tomato crepe.

As our conversation became lively, our sharing experience of
different crepes got even more enjoyable. We completed our lovely
lunch by sampling the two different kinds of dessert crepes with
cream cheese & raspberry jam and salt & butter & caramel.

What a pleasant afternoon that I had at Au Temps Jadis.

brique. Ce quartier était assez calme.

「オ・タン・ジャディス」クレープリーにて_a0097015_1572218.jpg

Chamber Music Concert on the Stanford Campus

Chamber Music Concert on the Stanford Campus_a0097015_013757.jpg

Chamber Music Concert: St. Lawrence String Quartet

A free lunch-time concert series that take place on weekdays during
summer.
The atmosphere on the Stanford University campus is open and casual.

The St. Lawrence String Quartet is a resident group at Stanford
University. They actively give concerts on the campus, in the U.S., and
overseas.
They are three men (two violinists and a pianist) and a female cellist.
Chamber Music Concert on the Stanford Campus_a0097015_0141491.jpg

The programs for this afternoon was Concerto G Major by Brahms.
This piece consists of four dynamic movements.
And I listened to the beautiful chamber music.
They were dressed in casual shirts and pants…my heart was calming
down.
It would be nice to listen to a chamber music concert in a formal
concert hall, but I would equally enjoy this type of casual concert.
While they were playing the piece, the expressions became active
on the players’ faces and with their arms and legs.
I was impressed by their exceptionally dynamic movement.
They were taking the rhythm with their feet, actively moving their
arms and legs in all directions, were almost half-way rising from the
chairs at times, and expressing with their whole bodies.
The four players were in perfect balance in their timing for breathing
and responding to the rhythm.

The more we become attentive in our daily lives, the more we create
an opportunity for experiencing the various types of performance art.
If only we could capture the subtle moment of things…

Taking a Walk at Stanford Shopping Center

The Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto to me is a very unique and
interesting place. A variety of individual shops are lined up as if they
are built on wide rows of streets. The parking lots are laid out around
the shops area in the outer square. Once you park your car, you feel
that you are stepping into a courtyard or a garden with the shops
attached to it.

What I enjoy the most about this shopping center is to take a walk
around the shops as the flowers and plants are arranged and
maintained beautifully throughout this place. The current season is
somewhere between the spring and summer: This afternoon I saw
some roses, pansies, carnations, and lilies in different colors.

Family Hero /

Family Hero / 輝ける女たち_a0097015_10353292.jpg

an testament à ses filleuls.
Family Hero / 輝ける女たち_a0097015_1039075.jpg

Je me demande pourquoi

The Family Hero

I went to see “The Family Hero” in Tokyo. This is one of the recent
movies from France directed by Thierry Kilfa. The movie starts with
the cabaret owner Gabriel’s death. He left a will to the related people
and the future business of cabaret (Blue Parrot) was handed over to
his god children. They are the son and daughter of his partner, Nino,
and each of them has a different mother.

I have three things that stand out in my mind about this movie.

1. The effect of one person’s death over the other people who
remain

The death of Gabriel brought all the related people together at the
Blue Parrot in Nice. While Gabriel was alive, everyone was living a life
with their past on hold. By seeing one another again after so many
years, each of the main characters was forced to deal with their past
that might have been painful to look at. Over the course of their
reunion, they all went back into the past, overcame their unresolved
problems, and moved onto the present and into the future. The death
of Gabriel in a way played a role of catharsis to each of the characters.

2. The realistic characterization of ordinary people empowered by the veteran actors and actresses
None of the main characters are nearly perfect or ideal. They all
possess weaknesses, shortcomings, or ashamed wounds carried
from their past, yet at the same time they are so natural and humane.
I felt very comfortable with each of these characters and saw a charm
in each one. I wonder why I am so enchanted by them. This may be because the mature actors and actresses could radiate the characters with their own lifetime experience. Catherine Deneuve, Miou-Miou,
Claude Brasseur, and Gerard Lanvin were wonderful.

3. The theme song in this movie playing a pivotal role

Just like what Gabriel did to everyone related, this song also brought
the main characters together in a more symbolic sense. It is The Rose,”
originally sung by Bette Midler. There is a stunning scene in the movie
where Marianne (Nino’s daughter) sings this song in French on the
stage at the Blue Parrot Cabaret.

Freedom Writers

I saw Freedom Writers on the plane bound for Tokyo. I didn’t recall this movie –The title didn’t leave me enough impact. As the movie started,
I found out that it had been released this year and that Hilary Swank
had starred in it.

Swank played a new high school teacher who teaches the kids labeled as “social failure” (mostly Hispanic or Black, poor, from dysfunctional
family, rejected, hurt, insecure, rebellious, etc.). I was struck by this
young teacher for her determination. She carried a strong sense of mission to serve these kids at-risk. She showed them how they could break their old pre-conceptual beliefs and habits to live a satisfying life.
As a class project, she introduced the kids the Diary of Anne Frank and gave them an assignment of keeping journals about their daily lives.
The intended objective for the kids was how they could apply the
lessons learned in the history to each of their situations. She made
the kids to be the Freedom Writers of their journals.

This is the human relationship that starts with love and care for others. Mutual trust cannot be attained overnight, but this movie shows that it surely is built if you continue to make an effort with sincerity. I thought that it was truly a provocative and touching movie.

Hilary Swank isn’t necessarily placed as one of the top actresses, but
I feel she carries a unique quality that makes her stand out when she
performs diverse yet challenging roles. She was absolutely impressive
when she took on the character of a boy experiencing a self-discovery
in the Boys Don’t Cry by Kimberly Peirce and the role as a female boxer
in the Million Dollar Baby by Clint Eastwood.
